‘Mapping Culture’, GPS Drawing Walk

By cultureandregenerationplymouth

The city is changing, cranes dotted along the landscape; signs of development and regeneration are inbound for Plymouth. One aspect of the strategy for the city includes the development of culture alongside buildings, landscaping and physical mapping.

This wordpress has been set up to create a debate and log your experiences and thoughts on the development of culture in the city. Creating a space for public debate and discussion. Developed as an experiment as part of the exhibition ‘SOS: Social Operating System for Plymouth’ currently at Plymouth Arts Centre developed in collaboration with i-DAT, Institute of Digital Art and Technology, University of Plymouth.

‘SOS: Social Operating System for Plymouth’ is online social networking software that is mapping the invisible and social exchanges of the city. Adverse to the statistics generated by city council, town planners and modelling of cities the exhibition forms a hub for real-life information sent in by the public of their experiences, activity, and physical use of the city Plymouth.

‘Mapping Culture’ was a proposition to James Coulton, Assistant Director of Culture, Sport and Leisure, Plymouth City Council to create a drawing through a GPS system to map his experience and knowledge of cultural development. The task was to walk around the city locating points and references where culture is happening now and where significant changes are planned.
